Polystyrene shows up in processing as two families that behave quite differently. General purpose polystyrene gives a hard, clear part, while the impact modified grade, usually called HIPS on the shop floor, gives a matt part that takes a knock.
- food packaging, cups, trays and lids on thermoforming
- housings and internal linings for appliances
- decorative and finishing strips, frames and profiles
- parts that need an accurate dimension with little movement over time
- sheet that goes on for thermoforming
With polystyrene it matters more than with PP or HDPE to know in advance which family you need. General purpose and impact grades are not swapped for one another without consequences for the finished part.
