High density polyethylene is chosen where the part has to survive rough handling. Unlike polypropylene, HDPE keeps its toughness as the temperature drops, so it is used for anything that stands outdoors or works in a cold plant.
- bins, drums, jerrycans and liquid containers
- transport packaging that is stacked and moved full
- pipe and fittings, including buried runs
- pallets, crates and municipal equipment
- film and bags on extrusion, where tear strength matters
HDPE is often taken as a replacement for PP on the same part, once it turns out the part cracks in the cold. If that is happening to you, it is worth trying a sample of HDPE recycled granules before you change the tool.
